3 Classic Melodramas Vol. 1

Dark Victory (1939), Kitty Foyle (1940), and The Heiress (1949)

Dark Victory (1939)- 1 hr 44 mins

"The Queen of Melodrama," Bette Davis, does not disappoint in her Oscar nominated performance as the wealthy socialite Judith Trahernne (Bette Davis). Judith becomes diagnosed with a brain tumor, and she must figure out how to live out her seemingly perfect life.

Davis is supported by an all star cast of actors, including future President Ronald Reagan, that make this film rise above the general "soapiness" of most melodramas.

Kitty Foyle (1940)- 1 hr 48 mins

Dennis Morgan (Wynn) and Ginger Rogers (Kitty)

Dennis Morgan (Wynn) and Ginger Rogers (Kitty)

Ginger Roger, in her Oscar winning performance, stars as Kitty Foyle. A young girl from a middle class working family, she falls in love with Philadelphia socialite, Wynn (Dennis Morgan), but his social class bars them from ever pursuing happiness. The two part and she falls for Dr. Mark Eisen (James Craig). He proposes, but when Wynn returns she must make a choice.

Kitty Foyle doesn't cross the border line of being predictable and over the top. It has a delightfully engaging plot with the perfect amount of romance!

The Heiress (1949)- 1 hr 56 mins

heiress.gif

A young, naive, and wallflower-type heiress, Catherine Sloper, falls in love when a young man, Morris (Montgomery Clift), surprisingly shows her romantic interest. But when Catherine's unloving father (Ralph Richardson) accuses him of being after her money, Catherine does not know if she can trust Morris.

The Heiress is captivating from the very first. Clift and de Havilland give amazing performances, de Havilland garnering an Oscar, in a film with multiple twists! Your guessing right along with de Havilland to the very end. It's a must watch!
