Gene Tierney Movie Recommendation #3
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)- 1 hr 47 mins
Recently widowed Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) begins her new life by moving to Gull Cottage on the British seaside with her daughter (a young Natalie Wood who would later star in West Side Story). She does not, however, expect to be met by the ghost of the old sea captain Gregg (Rex Harrison) who once lived there. Over time, the two form an unlikely friendship and connection. But when a suitor (George Sanders) comes calling, the two have to come to terms with their feelings for each other as well as the impossibility of their relationship.
This is a classic story of unrequited love with an unusual tension. Lucy falls for a ghost. Throughout the film, she is flesh and blood, the object of his desire and affection. And yet she is sad and lonely. Tierney has a supernatural sense about her that truly works with the film's peculiar noir feel. There is darkness and dread throughout the film. Perhaps closer to the gothic, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is a sort of "female Edgar Allan Poe story." She conveys what she is really thinking with other women. She artfully conveys both hope and despair. Bernard Hermann's romantic and eerie score only adds to this romantic fantasy.
