Weekend Watch 7/6-7/7
What Iām watching this weekend: Gone to Earth (1950; in color)- 1 hr 50 mins
I am really looking forward to watching the newly released Blu-ray edition of this film from British directing and writing team Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Powell and Pressburger, also known as "the Archers," are responsible for such beloved favorites as Black Narcissus (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948). This film, in particular though, has an interesting backstory to it. There are actually two different cuts of the film - the original, Gone to Earth, released in the UK and the American version, Wild at Heart (1952), which was released two years later. Jennifer Jones, who stars as the lead in this film, was married to producer David O. Selznick. Much to Powell and Pressburger's dismay, Selznick created the final cut that was seen in the United States. Stay tuned this Monday for my thoughts after seeing the film!

Thoughts after watching the film:
As I have come to expect from a Powell and Pressburger film, the cinematography is beautiful; the colors are vivid. The magical and fanciful story does not always rely on the dialogue. The symbolism and visuals are especially important in conveying the story. I find that the best films do this well, and this film is a great example of that.
