Boasting three stars to its credit- Humphrey Bogart, William Holden, and Audrey Hepburn make up an all-star cast. Hepburn stars as the film’s title character, Sabrina. Sabrina is a young girl in love with David Larrabee (William Holden)- a wealthy playboy who doesn’t even notice Sabrina. Sabrina also happens to be the daughter of the Larrabee family’s chauffer. The match seems impossible and her father (John Williams) soon sends her away to France to forget David. Two years, however, do not make her forget him. She returns, all grown up, and no sooner does she arrive than David notice her. It all seems to be a classic Cinderella story, but David and Sabrina may discover that this really isn’t a match made in heaven after all when David’s brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) steps in.

A classic Hepburn film, Sabrina teems with elegance, with Hepburn supplying her natural grace and charm to the role. She’s believable as the innocent girl with a hopeless, school-girl crush. You instantly understand and you’re ready to route for her, but that’s just it. You know that it’s a crush and you see the ending before she even sees it herself.

It’s a Hepburn film that has a similar quality to two of her other films, Roman Holiday (1952) and Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961). However, Sabrina is different in one key regard. It fails to make the casting believable. Many have remarked that Holden, rather than Bogart, would have been more plausible as the older brother Linus. Each of them seem too old for the part. However, the implausible casting is easily made up for by the film’s performances, particularly Hepburn’s. As always, She brings a captivating and sympathetic quality to the role. As such, the film remains at the top of the list of Hepburn’s many fans.
