William Holden Movie Recommendation #3
Picnic (1956; in color) - 1 hr 55 mins
Picnic stars William Holden as the rugged vagabond, Hal Carter. After hitching a ride on a freight train, Carter stops off in a rural town where he expects to secure a job from his wealthy college friend (Cliff Robertson). The Kansas town is small and cheerful. However, just one day’s time reveals its dark underpinnings and ulterior motives of its residents, particularly when Carter and his best friend’s girlfriend (Kim Novak) grow attracted to one another.
Based on the play by William Inge, Picnic takes the viewer for a wild and intense 24-hour ride. Sometimes the emotions ride a bit unreasonably high, but the film's great performances make it a must-see film. Rosalind Russell, Arthur O’Connell, and Betty Field are great. Moreover, Holden's portrayal of his character’s many layers is especially good. Picnic is an essential Holden film!
