Weekend Watch 6/27-6/28

What I’m watching this weekend: Romance on the High Seas (1948; in color)- 1 hr 39 mins

As June closes up, I thought a great way to finish up the month would be to watch Star of the Month Doris Day’s first film for the Weekend Watch! The film just recently came out on Blu-ray and it looks wonderful!

Day is spunky, band singer Georgia Garrett. Georgia has always wanted to travel the world and see the sights, but she’s never been able to afford it. Her dream comes true, though, when wealthy socialite Elvira Kent (Janis Paige) decides to have Georgia take her all expense paid trip instead, so that she can stay behind and spy on her supposedly cheating husband. There’s a catch, though. Georgia can only take the trip if she assumes Elvira’s name. Little does she know that Mr. Kent (Don DeFore) has sent a detective (Jack Carson) to spy on his supposedly cheating wife! And little does the detective know that he won’t be able to help falling for Georgia!

A fun musical comedy, Romance on the High Seas features a wonderful array of talent and a sparkling film debut for Day. The film introduced one of her all-time hits It’s Magic and launched Day on a film career that would cement her as one cinema’s sweethearts. This film makes it easy to see why.
