Based on James Hilton's best selling novel, Goodbye, Mr. Chips tells the story of Professor Charles Edward Chipping (Robert Donat). Chipping's first job is as a teacher at the prestigious Brookfield School for Boys. There, Chipping is far from popular. In his attempts to be taken seriously, he achieves the opposite. He is neither respected or liked, which becomes painfully clear to him when he is not chosen for the coveted position of housemaster despite his obvious qualifications. Lonely and depressed, he travels to Austria. There he meets the beautiful and unconventional Kathy (Greer Garson). The two fall in love, marry, and return to Brookfield. Chipping’s relationship with and love for Kathy changes him, and, in turn, his colleagues. He matures and becomes a much loved teacher. The film marked Greer Garson's first film role. Although the role was small, Garson’s portrayal is memorable and the undeniable linchpin of the film. Without her, "Mr. Chips" neither changes or matures.
