Weekend Watch 3/16-3/17
What I’m watching this weekend: Above Suspicion (1943; in color) - 1 hr 31 mins
Lately, I have been on an espionage film kick, watching films such as the comedic All Through the Night (1942) and Confidential Agent (1945). I’ve also been trying to watch some new ones, too. At the top of my list for this weekend is Above Suspicion. The film stars Joan Crawford and Fred MacMurray, our January Star of the Month and a noteworthy co-star of the March Star of the Month here at www.bingsbasement.com, Claudette Colbert.
Crawford and MacMurray are a newly married couple who soon find that their honeymoon to Germany is going to be far more than they bargained for, as two newly minted spies, just before the US entered WWII! While the film is likely to be a somewhat corny morale booster, I am excited to discover this film and what appears to be a rom-com like storyline. It’s always great to see and try to understand the messages that Americans needed and got during such a difficult time. And sometimes that meant creating a comedic spoof of something very serious. In All Through the Night (1942), comedy somewhat ensues when mobster meets Nazi!
