James Stewart Movie Recommendation #2
The Shop Around the Corner (1940) - 1 hr 39 mins
Set at Christmas time in Budapest, The Shop Around the Corner tells the story of a small general store, Matuschek and Co., and the employees who work there. The film particularly focuses on the relationship between long-time employee Alfred Kralik (James Stewart) and the newly-hired Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan). Kralik and Klara just can’t see eye to eye. Little do they know that the love letters they’ve been writing to an anonymous pen pal are really to each other!!
The Shop Around the Corner is laden with sharp wit and a clear chemistry amongst a great array of colorful characters. With a sweet tenderness that cannot be matched, it’s a great Christmas watch for family and friends! There’s a reason that this film was re-made twice - once into a musical film starring Judy Garland (1949) and a second time into the modern romance film You’ve Got Mail (1998).
