Weekend Watch 7/13-7/14
What I’m watching this weekend: How to Marry a Millionaire (1953; in color)- 1 hr 35 mins
Determined to marry millionaires, three models use their wit, looks, and limited funds to catch some of society’s elite bachelors. The process, however, proves more difficult than expected, and they three fortune hunters find themselves faced with deciding if a life of affluence is more important than true love.
The leads, supplied by Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable, and Marylin Monroe, have great chemistry, the costumes desinged by Travilla are beautiful, and everything is vividly captured in Technicolor. Despite these good points(?), though, I think that How to Marry a Millionaire fails to fulfill all of its potential. The film’s idea (?) itself makes its likelihood of being a great romantic comedy very promising, but it doesn’t make use of all of the opportunities that the film’s subject matter and plot provide (I am trying to say that it didn’t make use of all of the situational comedy that this plot idea could create). Perhaps this is due in large part to the short length of the film. But if you are looking for a playful, fun, and delightful movie, look no further! The film’s concept immediately intrigues the viewer, and you are soon absorbed by these three gold digger’s antics!
