Weekend Watch 3/9-3/10
What I’m watching this weekend: The Affairs of Dobie Gillis (1953; in color) - 1 hr 12 mins
When Dobie Gillis (Bobby Van) arrives as a freshman at Grainbelt University, he’s not ready to live up to the school’s motto of “Learn, learn learn. Work, work work.” On the contrary, he’s ready to simply have a good time, and he finds his match in Charlie Track (Bob Fosse). This all changes, though, when he meets Pansy Hammer (Debbie Reynolds), a student actually committed to the school’s demanding motto. Dobie, immediately smitten, signs up for the same classes she’s taking. So does Lorna (Barbara Ruick)- she’s the girl who’s smitten with Dobie. Charlie does, too- he’s smitten with Lorna. The four quickly form a troupe in an unlikely camaraderie that helps them deal with love and school, particularly when Pansy’s father forbids her from ever seeing Dobie again!
Equipped with the dance talents of Bobby Van, quick learner Debbie Reynolds, and future choreographer Bob Fosse as well Reynolds and Barbara Ruick’s lovely voices, The Affairs of Dobie Gillis is a wonderful, feel-good film that I find myself watching a few times a year. It’s easy to watch. There’s a mixture of comedy, energy, and fun musical numbers. You’ll at least leave with a smile!
