Spencer Tracy Movie Recommendation #4
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)- 1 hr 48 mins
Although the plot may be somewhat obvious, if not droll, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner was a landmark film. Not only was it Tracy's last film and his last pairing with Katharine Hepburn, it dealt with a serious topic at a pivotal time: interracial marriage.
When Joanna Drayton (Katharine Houghton) returns home to her family in Los Angeles with an African-American fiancé (Sidney Poitier), the beliefs of her otherwise civil rights supporting parents (Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn) are tested, along with those of her fiancé's parents (Beah Richards and Roy Glenn).
Everyone knew that this would be Tracy's last film and that he did not have much time left. In fact, Tracy had to put up his salary and Hepburn had to use her own money to back the film because of the concern that Tracy would die before filming ended. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is packed with raw and real emotion thanks to amazing performances from Tracy, Hepburn, and Poitier.
If you do like this film, try checking out some more films with Spencer Tracy under the direction of Stanley Kramer. Enjoy!
