Montgomery Clift Movie Recommendation #3
Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)- 3 hrs 8 mins
It is 1948. During the famous Nuremberg trials, four German judges stand tried for their participation in atrocities under the Nazi regime. Col. Tad Lawson (Richard Widmark) serves as the prosecutor and Hans Rolfe (Maximilian Schell) as counsel for the defense, with Chief Judge Haywood (Spencer Tracy) as the presiding judge. Haywood must listen to the testimonies of those who were affected by the decisions of these four powerful men. Among the witnesses is Rudolph Peterson (Montgomery Clift), a man whose whole life was drastically altered because of these men.
Despite his ill health, Montgomery Clift delivers a raw, uncalculated, and natural performance in a mainly adlibbed scene. Relative to the rest of the film, the scene may be short in duration but it is unforgettable nonetheless. It is Clift at one of his lowest points as a person but most powerful in a performance.
