Weekend Watch 6/13-6/14
What I’m watching this weekend: Desk Set (1957; in color)- 1 hr 44 mins
Sparks fly in more ways than one in this electric comedy starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in the eighth of their nine films together. Hepburn is Bunny Watson - the head of the research department at a big broadcasting company- and she knows her stuff! Bunny and her department do not know what to do, however, when a methods engineer, Richard Sumner (Tracy), poses a threat to her department with his planned introduction of a computer-based system. But what neither could engineer is their mutual chemistry!
Their first color film, Hepburn and Tracy’s performances are just as fun, vivid, and magnetic as the tantalizing teals and rich reds that dominate the film and typify the era. The supporting cast lends a hand, too. When Joan Blondell (Gold Diggers of 1933; A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) leads the supporting cast, there’s no doubt you’ll leave with a smile on your face!
