Weekend Watch 9/1-9/2
What I’m watching this weekend: Casanova Brown (1944)- 1 hr 34 mins
Perhaps you'll see a trend from last week's post, and that's because you are right. I've been reading Teresa Wright's biography A Girls Got to Breathe by Donald Spoto, and, as a result, I've been watching and re-wathcing many of her films.
Casanova Brown has just returned to his hometown after a whirlwind marriage and annulment from Isabel (Teresa Wright). He is now set to marry for the second to his fiancé Madge (Anita Louise). However, after he finds out that Isabel has had a baby, he rushes to keep the infant from adoption. He soon discovers that he and Isabel may have had more than a foolish romance.
Although the film is certainly not equal to the best Rom-Coms, nor of Rom-Coms in general, it is entertaining and it does have some great little moments in a picture that had such potential in living up to its original play. At least give it a go! There are some wonderful performances and a slew of farcical moments. Even if you don't like the film, do check out Cooper and Wright's first film together The Pride of the Yankees (1942). It was nominated for many Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Actor. Enjoy, and let me know your thoughts in the comments!
