Weekend Watch 5/11-5/12
What I’m watching this weekend: Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957) - 1 hr 48 mins
I am very excited to be finishing Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison this weekend. I’ve only just started it and I’m already certain that I am going to like it. It’s a WW2 film where, in an unlikely screen pairing, actors Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum star as two individuals trapped on a remote Pacific island wanted by the Japanese. Even more unlikely are their occupations. Kerr is an Irish Nun (Kerr) and Mitchum plays a tough U.S. Marine.
From what I have seen so far, the two deliver great performances (Mitchum playing a less “abrasive” character than he usually does. Their chemistry is a balance of sweet whit and sincerity that makes the film remarkably engaging and winsome. The film’s cinematographer Oswald Morrison also does a wonderful job, particularly in the opening scene. As an audience member, you will certainly feel as though you are quietly there with the characters.
