What I’m watching this weekend: Force of Arms (1951) - 1 hr 39 mins

I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about William Holden as the Star of the Month here at Bing’s Basement. I was already quite familiar with his life and body of work. However, I was still unfamiliar with quite a few of his films, especially some of his earlier work. Among these is Force of Arms.

Force of Arms was released in 1951, a year after two of Holden’s greatest successes in the films Sunset Boulevard and Born Yesterday.

I've only begun Force of Arms (I hope to finish it this weekend). So far, I wouldn't put it on my list of Holden’s top ten films, but from what I have seen so far, it has things to commend it. Among these are its light comedy and, as usual, Holden’s performance. He  plays a sensitive but tough solider who has just returned from fighting in The Battle of San Pietro in Italy. While on his five-day leave, he meets WAC Lieutenant Eleanor MacKay. The two fall in love rather quickly but with war so near, it’s hard to see their romance lasting. I'll find out soon enough!
