After crash landing in Italy, Colonel Von Ryan is sent to a POW camp where, as the highest-ranking officer, he leads the men in a daring escape aboard a hijacked German cargo train.  

Sinatra is both authoritative and heroic in his portrayal of Col. Von Ryan. He does not, though, sacrifice his characteristically charming and smart-aleck personality in the process. This only adds to the texture and dynamics of the film. Von Ryan is not a perfect man or soldier. He makes mistakes, but that is a part of the film's appeal. The tension between the newcomer Von Ryan and the camp's fellow high-ranking officers sets into motion a ride of camaraderie, friction, and action with an ending supplied by Sinatra himself.
