Weekend Watch 3/30-3/31

What I’m watching this weekend: The Moon is Blue (1953) - 1 hr 39 mins

An interesting film to say the least, The Moon is Blue is one of the first films to truly contest Hollywood’s Motion Picture Production Code - a code that created a series of guideline prohibiting certain content and language in films. The Moon is Blue - first a successful play - was released without the code's approval. In fact, it was banned in Boston for its flippant use of words like “virgin” and discussion of seduction. Nevertheless, the film proved successful and would spur on the production of many films that would push the code's boundaries, eventually leading to the dissolution of the code all together.

When Patty (Maggie McNamara) meets successful architect Don Gresham (William Holden) atop the Empire State Building, she agrees to go out to dinner with him despite his questionable intentions. The two end up having dinner at his house, and Patty proves to not be like any of the girls that Don knows. She’s a talker and is not afraid to make her opinions known, particularly how she tries to be a good girl. Don finds himself quickly taken with Patty, but misunderstandings, the threat of another suitor (David Niven), and his ex-girlfriend (Dawn Addams) all make for a bumpy ride!

A unique film that reflects an interesting moment in history, The Moon is Blue is a witty, situational rom-com with some firecracker dialogue!
