Barbara Stanwyck Movie Recommendation #3

Sorry, Wrong Number (1948)- 1 hr 29 mins

Heiress Leona Stevenson (Barbara Stanwyck) is bedridden and relies primarily on her telephone for managing her life and staying in communication with her family and friends when they are not there. While making a phone call, Leona overhears two men plotting the murder of a woman. The already controlling and acquisitive Leona grows far more frenzied as she tries to put the pieces together to save this poor woman, who she will soon find out happens to be herself!

Originally a radio play, Barbara Stanwyck takes on the role of the menaced Leonora who unwittingly discovers the plot to her murder in this climactic thriller that garnered her an Oscar nomination for her performance. Unlike many who have starred in suspense films as the "terrorized woman," such as contemporary Joan Crawford, Stanwyck portrays this character naturally. Her character may be dramatic, but she does not overdramatize her character’s qualities to the point that she is laughably unbelievable- a show rather than an actual person. This and the suspenseful script have made this film a noteworthy “noir-like” thriller.
