Weekend Watch 12/28-12/29
What Iām watching this weekend: Hangover Square (1945) - 1 hr 17 mins
This will be my first film by John Brahm- a director who specialized in psychological "chillers." It is also my first film with "character actor" Laird Cregar cast as the film's lead. Set in Victorian London, Cregar is promising composer George Harvey Bone whose life grows more and more controlled by lapses of time of which he has no memory. The only clues that he has are simultaneous crimes that seem to bear a frightening connection.
Thoughts after watching the film.
This was Cregar's last film before his untimely death. He is perfect as the psychologically conflicted composer whose obsession with the ambitious nightclub singer Nanette (Linda Darnell) contributes to these "spells" and perhaps even his own demise.
The film features support from the wonderful George Sanders as Dr. Middleton of Scotland Yard and Linda Darnell as the perfect Victorian femme fatale in this period "psychological thriller," I thoroughly enjoyed this film, particularly Cregar's nuanced performance.
