William Holden Movie Recommendation #1

Golden Boy (1939) - 1 hr 39 mins

Joe Bonaparte (William Holden) has been playing the violin his whole life, and he’s quite good. However, he doesn’t seem to be getting anywhere and he soon tries his hand at boxing. He finds success in that, too, but he simply can’t do both. His boxing career could ruin his hands. Yet, at the same time, his love for his fight manager’s fiancé (Barbara Stanwyck) and his heart for music make it a difficult decision.

Holden’s first big film, Golden Boy, is overly sentimental in telling the story of a young man torn between his passions. It’s certainly not one of Holden’s best films, but it is his breakout role. That’s what makes it particularly interesting to watch- to see Holden’s very “first” film and to then see where his career went. I recommend giving it a shot!
