Weekend Watch 9/8-9/9

What I’m watching this weekend: The Front Page (1931)- 1 hr 43 mins

Pat O'Brien and Adolphe Menjou in The Front Page (1931)

Pat O'Brien and Adolphe Menjou in The Front Page (1931)

Nominated for Best Picture, Howard Hughes's The Front Page shines as the precursor to the Rom-Com classic His Girl Friday (1940), only this time Hildy John is a guy (Pat O'Brien) instead of the lovely Rosalind Russell

Hildy Johnson is ready to leave the newspaper business and settle down with his fiancé Peggy (Mary Brian). However, his newspaper editor Walter Burns (Adolphe Menjou) has other plans in mind. A man accused of murder and sentenced to be hung has just escaped. Burns sees the opportunity for securing a huge story and uses every trick in the book to keep Hildy from leaving for his wedding. Hilarity ensues and a zany, loud, fast paced, character actor driven comedy leaves you with a crazy two hours of entertainment!

Whether you're new to classic film or a fan of His Girl Friday try The Front Page. It is a film that was way ahead of its time. It balanced comedy and social critique, and it used cinematography in a way that supported the film's fast pace.

If you get a chance to see both His Girl Friday and The Front Page let me know in the comments your thoughts and if you preferred one over the other.
