3 Classic Christmas Films Vol. 1

Remember the Night (1940), Miracle on 34th Street (1947), and White Christmas (1954)

I hope that you have been enjoying The 12 Days of Christmas post to get you through all the classic Christmas films. That was intended as short list, but I’m sure some of you would like more information on these. With Christmas just around the corner, I thoughtthat this month’s 3 in a Category post would be the best time to showcase a few of them.

Remember the Night (1940)- 1 hr 34 mins

In my opinion, this is one of the most underrated Christmas films.  Double Indemnity (1944) co-stars Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray would work together in other films. In Remember the Night, they star as Lee Leander and John Sargent, a criminal and state prosecutor. Lee has just been caught shoplifting and is being tried for her third offense. Sargent is the prosecutor on the case. He decides to postpone the case given the unlikelihood of securing a conviction so close to Christmas. Feeling a little guilty for leaving Miss Leander in jail for Christmas, he posts her bail. With no place for her to go, he hesitantly invites her to spend Christmas with his family and an unexpected romance sparks between the two.

A warm-hearted film, Remember The Night’s depiction of an average Indiana family inviting an unexpected stranger brings the spirit of Christmas into your own home.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)- 1 hr 54 mins

This is a classic for every age and generation. Despite the film’s May release, Miracle on 34th Street is a holiday classic inside and out. Edmund Gwenn stars as Kris, Kris Kringle that is - a man who claims to be the one and only real Santa Claus. Maureen O’Hara stars as Doris Walker, the woman who hires him last minute to replace the drunk Santa Claus she had hired for Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. Kris stays on at Macy’s, bringing the Christmas spirit to the busy department store and convincing nearly everyone around him that he is indeed Santa Claus. However, it’s Mrs. Walker and her daughter, a very young Natalie Wood, who are his biggest projects, and it’s only when his sanity is tested that the State of New York will have to decide if he is the real thing. You won't want to miss it!

White Christmas (1954; in color)- 2 hrs 20 mins

“Snow, snow,  snow, snow, snow…It won’t be long before we’ll all be there with snow….,” at least that’s what the musical comedy team of Wallace & Davis and the Haynes Sisters expect to find when they arrive in Vermont. Where they end up, though, is in a snowless Vermont at a failing inn owned by their commanding general from WW2. Determined to do something for him, the newly minted foursome bring the whole Wallace & Davis troupe down to the inn to put on a show that will hopefully put the inn back in business. Now all they need is a "White Christmas!"

With music by the great Irving Berlin, this revamp of the film Holiday Inn (1942), also starring Bing Crosby, does not disappoint. It has an entertaining plot, top-notch talent, and a score of great musical numbers.
