I have talked about this film before, so in this post I will focus on Montgomery Clift's contribution to the classic Western and why this film was so pivotal in his career. Although it was released in 1948 after Clift's first film The Search, Red River was actually made two years prior in 1946. Clift was initially timid about starring alongside the powerful/forceful John Wayne, but he accepted the role nonetheless. Rather than overplay his part alongside one of Hollywood's kings, he chose to rest in his character's quiet presence and power. This certainly worked. Wayne was initially hesitant about Clift being believable as a cowboy, but after their first scene together, he no longer had any worries. A Place in the Sun (1951) solidified Clift as a handsome leading man, but his work alongside John Wayne proved to audiences that he was more than just a pretty face.
